In the pedestrian precinct of the medieval town centre you’ll start a trip into the past: old towers, restored churches and fine wood carvings at the cohesive half-timbering ensemble will transport you back for centuries. During a town tour, you’ll get to know Eschwege and its eventful history even better, also the pewter figure gallery and the town museum are offering the chance to this. The Sophiengarten with medicinal and kitchen herbs, symbolic plants and cosy resting points is an oasis of silence midst of the lively old town.
Choose from the varied leisure possibilities: cycling tours, hiking tours, sailing and windsurfing grounds on the Lake Werratal with bathing beach and beach volleyball, water hiking with the canoe on the Werra, outdoor and indoor swimming pool with sauna, solarium, black hole chute with a length of 80m, children’s chute with a length of 20m and children’s adventure area, paddling spots, tennis, bowling, riding, balloon trips, gliding, covered-wagon tours and individual group programmes.
Regular concert, theatre and cabaret events offer something for everyone’s taste – just as the nationwide-established Open Flair Festival in August.
But what were Eschwege without the Johannisfest?
Residents and guests celebrate jointly the festival of joy on 5 days in July. The Dietemann, the symbolic figure of the inhabitants of Eschwege, climbs down from his tower at the landgrave’s castle and heads the festive procession. In September, the Wurstfest follows, and the Eschwege doll celebration marks the end of the event year in November.
You will find your comfortable holiday accommodation in hotels, guest houses, holiday apartments, holiday homes or with private home owners, in the youth hostel, or at the Knaus campsite with mobile home port at the Lake Werratal.
