Between the king of the north-Hessian mountains, the Hohe Meißner (754m) and the Werra, the rural district Meißner with its seven parts of the town (Abterode, Alberode, Germerode, Vockerode, Weidenhausen, Wellingerode, Wolferode) is situated in the foothills of the Meißner.
The attraction of the climatic health resort Germerode is the game and recreation park with many animals, the adventure playground with wood labyrinth and the adventure museum “Waldwichtelhaus”, for which families are quite taken in particular. Moreover, the Romanesque monastery at Germerode is worth seeing.
At Abterode, a visit of the leisure grounds Rehberg with barbecue hut, playground, paddling spot and Rehberg trail suggests itself. The visitor’s mine Grube Gustav in the Höllental (near Abterode) is a special underground experience. Stories and information on the hard work of the miners in the crawl gallery are the theme of the guided tours through the former mine where copper slate and barite have been quarried.
Pure nature can be experienced on all of your expeditions in the foothills of the Meißner and on the Hohe Meißner: rare plants, strange rock formations, marvellous views and, in particular, breathtaking silence. Go for a hike on the Hessian extra tour P1.
Having been awarded the Deutsches Wandersiegel (German hiking seal), this hiking trail guarantees special experience and views. Take part in the guided hiking tours of the nature reserve Meißner. And, at the end of your hiking tour, refresh your feet on the bare-foot path of the youth village Meißner.
In winter, the local mountain of Frau Holle, the Hohe Meißner, is a real centre of attraction. When this kind-hearted soul shakes up her duvets, downhill slopes, cross-country trails and hiking trails sink into a dreamlike white.
Choose your holiday accommodation in the country hotel, in conference guest houses, private rooms, holiday apartments, holiday homes, the youth village, the fire brigade hostel, or in the house of the skiing club.
