The smallest town of the district Werra-Meißner is Wanfried providing a home for 5,000 people with its four parts (Heldra, Altenburschla, Volkershausen, and Aue). Situated at the Werratal cycle track, the Herkules-Wartburg cycle track, and the Hessian cycle track R5, Wanfried is brilliant for bikers.
Wanfried’s visible history is impressive:
Once, the harbour – the Schlagd – has been the terminus of the Werra-Weser navigation and an important place of transhipment for goods from and to South-eastern Europe. Still today, magnificent merchant’s houses with restored half-timbering bear witness to this time of prosperity. Wanfried is a real pearl at the Deutsche Fachwerkstraße (German half-timbering road).
The German post-war history comes to life in the in the documentation centre of the Keudell Castle with local heritage museum.
Wanfried is a starting point for expeditions into the neighbouring Thuringia, for example, to the Wartburg, the Creuzburg or to Mühlhausen
Hikes to the Plesseturm (480m) and to the Turm der Einheit (Tower of Unity) on the Heldrastein (503m) inspire with distant views into the Werratal and the Hohe Meißner up to the Harz. The forest nature and experience trail on the Heldrastein enriches the hike by humming stone, tree telephone, sound and fragrance stations
The part of town Heldra with its pretty village museum and the Kleegarten (Hiker’s hostel in the historical half-timbered manor house) offers a comfortable, rural atmosphere.
Should you decide to take up your holiday accommodation at the historical village green, or with private house owners in the idyllic Altenburschla, you will score a hit as regards cosiness as well – paved roads and neat half-timbered houses inspire. Also by canoe, Heldra, Altenburschla and Wanfried are well accessible destinations worth seeing.
When making up your mind as regards accommodation, you are free to choose: Hosts in hotels, hostels, private houses, holiday apartments, or holiday homes will welcome every guest! The mobile home port with 12 sites as well as the small campsite at Altenburschla are real hot tips.
